Golden Tapestry
22.75" x 53"
In oriental painting the artist’s object is to evoke a profound state of emotional engagement in one who views the artwork. The painter will not endeavor to represent landscape accurately; that is left to the skilled Western copyist! Instead, the viewer is invited to see the landscape through another’s eyes, and to remember and relive the physical and emotional experiences engendered by the viewer’s own forays into the natural world.
This tapestry was created in celebration of my promotion to Master level in the Korean martial art, Taekwondo, under the guidance of Grand Master Tae Eun Lee.
The Korean script on the tapestry reads as follows:
- Upper left: (hwa pyung) Peace of Mind
Lower left: (hab byung) Unity
Center: (keum soo kang shan) A Golden Tapestry of Rivers and Mountains (referring to the spectacular topography of Korea)
Lower right: (moon moo kyum jun ha da) Being equally competent in both civil and military arts
