Rough Terrain
Solo Show of Abstract Art
Watson Art Centre Gallery
Dauphin Manitoba
10 Sept. - 15 Oct. 2013
On Tuesday, 10 September, 2013, from 3:30 to 6:00pm, I hosted the opening reception of my solo exhibit, Rough Terrain, at the Watson Art Centre in Dauphin Manitoba. Over forty people attended, quite a few from away...Vancouver, Toronto, Winnipeg, Brandon, Prince Albert, West Kelowna, Shoal Lake, Melville. Two years in the planning, I have on exhibit till 15 October thirty-five acrylic abstract paintings and two landscapes depicting the Riding Mountains south of Dauphin.
- “Magnificent!”
- “Vibrant”
- “Outstanding”
- “Beautiful work”
- “Love the passion”
- “Gorgeous”
- “Colours are great”
- “Explosion of colour!!”
In the week following the reception, another seventeen guests signed the guest book, one of whom chose to make one of my abstracts her own.
Thank you, Ms. Katherine Arkay of Ottawa, for the loan of two abstracts, “Duality” and “Marriage”, for the duration of the show. I am also most grateful to my mother, my sisters and their families, and my cousin Dianne and her husband for their support in preparing for and hosting the opening reception. Likewise, this show would not have been possible without the support and special talents of my son Adam (web design, planning, organization) and my husband Glenn (photography, travel agent, chauffeur, crating of the artwork, web updates).
Thanks also to the Mayor of Dauphin, His Worship Eric Irwin, for his insightful and encouraging remarks during the reception and for wearing his van Gogh tie!
Pictures from the opening reception can be seen here .

On 18 September, 2013, some of the local artists joined me at the Watson Art Centre for a “Paint with the Artist” session. I showed the process I use for creating my acrylic abstracts and we had an excellent exchange on acrylics techniques and on the ways and means of creating art. Together we began work on an abstract acrylic dyptic. We returned on 25 September to continue this collective creative endeavour and will meet weekly until it is finished.

The weekend of the 21 – 22 September I attended a workshop at the Watson Art Centre, instructed by well-known Brandon artist, Ben Davis. The workshop was entitled Reprise/Reprisal. Ben took us on a wild excursion to experience out of the ordinary ways of making art and unusual methods to release artistic expression.
